A flexible option for busy people

The Jakarta 12 Day Intensive Course is a 200 hour Level 1 training that is accredited with Yoga Alliance and is a Fitness Australia Approved Program for 15 CEC’s. The course is comprised of two parts – Parts A & B:

Part A: 12-day Non Residential Intensive

Held at Bliss WellnessCo Jakarta, the Part A Intensive provides you with the opportunity to immerse yourself in your yoga studies and practice-teaching for 12 days straight, a total of 120 hours.

Part B: Correspondence

Part B allows you to complete your remaining training hours (80 hours) by correspondence, in your own time and is included in the cost. The correspondence component begins 4 weeks before the course commencement date (Part A) and then continues at a personal pace under the supervision of Byron Yoga faculty, after the 12 day intensive, for as long as you need.

Purna Yoga - Making Yoga Complete

Yoga is a lot about giving and receiving. It has been proposed that we only keep what we have by giving it away, which is one of the main motivations for teaching and training others to teach.

The yoga taught at Byron Yoga Centre is called Purna, meaning integrated or complete. Purna Yoga represents a holistic approach to yoga integrating not just the physical postures but also philosophy, meditation, pranayama breath control and the yogic personal and social code of ethics. The postural instruction is alignment focused. Sequences range from gentle restorative to dynamic vinyasa. Blocks, belts and bolsters are available to be used to support and modify postures safely.

We seek to integrate all 8 limbs (Ashtanga) of yoga the way it was originally taught, more than 3000 years ago in India. Yoga asanas, or postures, are just one of these limbs. The other limbs are equally important, including meditation, pranayama breath control, and the personal and social code of ethics, the yamas and niyamas.

The practice of yoga is intended to be joyful and to lighten the heart and mind by calming and energizing. We encourage students at all levels to build flexibility, strength and stamina of body, mind and spirit. The postural instruction is alignment focused. Sequences range from gentle restorative to dynamic vinyasa. Yoga philosophies, such as ahimsa (non violence), are threaded throughout our classes. This helps bring about a deeper understanding of the key yogic values including diet and lifestyle aspirations. Many Byron Yoga Centre teacher trainees discover, as a consequence, that yoga becomes for them a way of life.

Teaching Faculty

Veteran yoga teacher John Ogilvie is one of Australia’s most respected and experienced teachers, and founder of Byron Bay’s long-time yoga school, Byron Yoga Centre, now celebrating its 23rd year. John’s classes are a celebration of life - fun and dynamic, bringing out your inner joy.

John has been practicing yoga for 30 years and teaching for 25. He had 20 years of disciplined training in the Iyengar method. As John Ogilvie’s foundation training was in the Iyengar yoga lineage, his instructions always focus on correct alignment. In his class the basics will be covered with additional emphasis placed on refining alignment, corrections and adjustments. John’s teaching style is entertaining and completely accessible.  His instructions are clear and simple, always with a focus on keeping his students safe and encouraging you to listen to your own body’s needs and only work at a level appropriate to you, at any given time.

Byron Yoga Centre now teaches John’s signature Purna Yoga. Purna Yoga means integrated or complete, and represents a holistic approach to yoga, integrating not just the physical postures but also philosophy, meditation, pranayama breath control and the yogic personal and social code of ethics. Sequences range from gentle restorative to dynamic vinyasa. John encourages students at all levels to build flexibility, strength and stamina of body, mind and spirit. Course Content:

Part A consists of an intensive program covering a broad range of fascinating subjects all aimed at deepening your understanding of not just the postures, but also pranayama (breathing practices), meditation, and yoga philosophy and lifestyle.

A big focus is teaching you to teach and making sure that both your practice and your teaching is safe and aware. All teacher trainees get the opportunity to develop their teaching skills in a real-life context in student classes for the public at Bliss WellnessCo located in Jakarta.

Over a relatively short time, you’ll emerge with the practical skills and confidence to launch your yoga teaching career.

“I did not expect such a depth of content or practice, which I am finding beneficial from a personal level as well as a potential studio operation level. I am enjoying every piece of reading, homework and personal practice.” T. Butler, Level 1 Graduate.
