Q: When are retreats scheduled in Byron Bay and overseas?
A: We offer retreats throughout the year, you can view current dates here. Please note that at other times of the year we offer teacher training courses and regular daily classes.

Q: How do I know if there are places available on a retreat?
A: We keep the home page regularly up to date regarding bookings and will add a comment regarding availability under each retreat date, eg. few places remaining or fully booked. If there is no comment please go ahead and complete the online registration form to secure your place. In the unlikely event that the retreat is already fully booked we will refund your deposit in full or transfer it to another retreat date as per your preference. Alternatively you can email the Retreats Manager to enquire about the date of your choice.

Q: How proficient in yoga do I need to be to join a retreat?
A: Our retreats are suitable for people of all levels including beginners. Each retreat includes either two yoga classes daily; the 6am class includes pranayama and meditation, and the 4pm class is more restorative. However this schedule may vary. You can join in as many or as few classes as you choose, there's no pressure to attend every class.

You may want to re-connect with or develop your yoga practice or gain a more holistic understanding of yoga. Our retreats are suitable for everyone with an interest in yoga.

People with a foundation in the basic yoga postures as well as the more advanced are encouraged to join our retreats. An advanced practitioner is not necessarily a person who can move deeply into advanced postures; an advanced practitioner is someone who comes to the mat with a level of maturity, a willingness to learn and an understanding of the limits of their own body.

Q: Is the retreat an asana intensive?
A: No, the retreat is an enjoyable and relaxing experience, offering a holistic knowledge of yoga to raise awareness and understanding of yoga beyond the asana. Evening and afternoon sessions are offered on meditation, philosophy, health, chanting and more.

Q: I'd like to join the retreat as a step to teacher training, is this ok?
A: Yes, the retreat is an ideal way to deepen your experience of yoga and consider if you'd like to take the next step on the yogic path by enrolling on one of our teacher training courses. A retreat is also a great way to meet the people who teach during the training. You'll experience the ambience of the Byron Yoga Centre so that you feel confident in your choice of training with us. The training courses are designed for those who may not wish to be teachers at this stage of their yoga journey, but would like to deepen their own practice and experience of yoga.

Q: I follow a different spiritual path (or I don’t have a spiritual path), is this ok?
A: Yes, our tradition respects and honors all paths. Yoga can only deepen your own spirituality.

Q: When will I find out if I have been accepted into the retreat?
A: After you submit your completed retreat application form and have paid the deposit, you will be receive a confirmation email, subject to availability.

Q: How many participants are enrolled in each retreat?
A: Our retreats average 20 participants, with a high participant - retreat staff ratio.

Q: What is the typical age range of the participants?
A: Participants generally range from 25 to 60 years of age, with the average age of 30.

Q: What is included in the price of the retreat?
A: Our yoga retreats include twin share accommodation, all meals (healthy and delicious vegetarian cuisine), three yoga classes daily, a complimentary one hour massage, afternoon and evening programs eg. meditation, philosophy, health talks and kirtan (chanting). A: Our retreats include twin share accommodation, however single rooms are occasionally possible, subject to availability. If room allocation allows for a single room, payment of 50% of the retreat cost as a single supplement will apply in addition to the twin share retreat price. Please request a single room at the time of booking on the understanding that it cannot be guaranteed.

Q: What do I need to bring for the retreat?
A: We recommend you bring a mixture of lightweight and warm, comfortable yoga clothing, layers are best, light shoes / sandals, swim wear, sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen, toiletries and first aid kit, insect repellent, camera, alarm clock, torch, journal, water bottle, light raincoat or umbrella and daypack.

You are welcome to bring your own yoga mat, however all yoga props including mats, blocks, belt, blankets and bolsters will be available.

PRIOR TO THE RETREAT

Q: Is there anything I need to do to prepare for the retreat?
A: You may find it helpful to prepare a list of things to do before your retreat begins; work, family, social commitments etc. Recognising what’s important to do now and what can wait until your return is an important aspect of minimising potential stress and being free to fully immerse yourself in the retreat experience.

Retreat participants may like to consider the following to make the most of the experience:
1. Why have I chosen to join this retreat?
2. How would I like to make this retreat time meaningful?
3. What do I hope to achieve during this time of yoga and relaxation?
4. Is there anything particular I would like to learn / understand in relation to yoga postures I have been practicing or yoga philosophy?

Q: Do you send pre departure notes?
A: Yes, we will email information approx two weeks prior to the start of your retreat with suggestions for what to bring, what to consider and transfer details etc.

Q: How do I secure a place on the retreat?
A: Please complete the online application form for the retreat of your choice including your credit card details for the $625 deposit to confirm your place on the retreat. When we have processed your application you will then receive a confirmation email.

Q: When is full payment for the retreat due?
A: The balance of the retreat fees are payable six weeks before the retreat commencement date. Credit card payments are processed automatically as part of the terms and conditions of booking. If you book within six weeks of the retreat commencement full payment will be due.

Q: Where is the location of the retreat?
A: Retreat locations vary according to the type of retreat. Our Yoga & Meditation Retreats plus our Wellness & Rejuvenation Retreats are held at our secluded rural venue in Byron Bay - just a short 10-minute walk or cycle to the town centre. Our Beach Yoga Retreats are held at 2 Alcorn Street, Suffolk Park, Byron Bay, moments from Tallows Beach.

Q: Do you arrange airport transfers?
A: Please arrange your own airport transfers - helpful details are available here. When you arrive at Ballina Byron Airport or Coolangatta Gold Coast Airport, please go to the transport counter and they will direct you to the next shuttle bus to Byron. Ask the driver to drop you at the retreats venue, located at 2 Alcorn Street, Suffolk Park, Byron Bay. Most drivers will be familiar with this location.

DURING THE RETREAT

Q: Do I need to follow any ethical guidelines?
A: There are some simple guidelines to help create a sattvic (yogic) environment, conducive to the retreat experience. Retreat participants are expected to be vegetarian, and cigarette, drug and alcohol free.

Q: Am I expected to attend all classes and sessions, or is the schedule flexible?
A: The retreat schedule is completely flexible. Although we encourage you to immerse yourself in the retreat experience and join in all the yoga classes and the afternoon and evening sessions, you are free to join in as much or as little as you prefer.

It's important to listen to your own body and attend what feels right for you, for many people two classes daily is more than usual and we suggest you find the balance between challenging yourself and being gentle when necessary. There is no pressure to attend all yoga classes and you can create your own unique retreat experience within the schedule offered.

Q: How many yoga classes are there each day?
A: On the arrival day, Saturday, there is a 4pm yoga class. On the departure day, Friday, there is a 6am yoga class. All other days on our yoga retreats Sunday - Thursday include two yoga classes daily. The 6am class is more dynamic and includes pranayama and meditation, the 4pm class is more restorative. You can join in as many or as few classes as you choose, there's no pressure to attend every class. The schedule varies for our themed retreats.

Q: Is there any free time during the retreat?
A: Yes each morning between 9-12 and after lunch, from 2 - 4pm is free. During this time you may like to attend the afternoon talk, book a massage, visit the beach or just relax. As the schedule is flexible you can create your own free time during the retreat at other times if you feel this is what you need.

Q: There is one complimentary massage included in the yoga retreat, can I book additional wellness treatments?
A: Yes, a range of therapists offering different healing modalities will be available during the retreat. You can book additional treatments and pay the therapists directly. The pre departure notes, which are emailed approx two weeks prior to the commencement of each retreat, include details of the therapists available. Details of how to book will be explained in the welcome circle when you arrive. There will be a list of available time slots displayed on the notice board for you to book additional sessions as required.
