For over three decades, Byron Yoga Centre, led by John Ogilvie, has been on a dedicated journey to weave sustainability into the very fabric of our ethos. We recognise the profound interconnectedness between our well-being, the health of our planet, and the vitality of our shared communities. Our commitment to sustainability isn’t just a choice; it’s a way of life.

Sustainability

Our Sustainable Practices:

Our Yoga Retreats and Yoga Teacher Training programs not only offer a haven for personal growth but also provide a unique opportunity to connect with nature and cultivate mindfulness. As you embark on your yoga journey with us, rest assured that our commitment to sustainability extends to every aspect of your experience.

  • Solar Power: With 30 kilowatts of solar panels, we harness the power of the sun to fuel our operations, from providing energy to heating our mineral salt swimming pool. The majority of our hot water needs are met through a solar heating system, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint.
  • Rainwater Harvesting: We embrace the gift of rain, collecting and utilising 800,000 liters of rainwater for various purposes, minimising our reliance on external water sources.
  • Eco-Friendly Toilets: Our commitment extends to eco-friendly sanitation with Clivus Multrum composting toilets, ensuring responsible waste management.
  • Recycling Initiatives: We take recycling seriously, separating waste into clearly labeled bins for ‘organic’ and ‘recycling,’ diverting minimal waste to landfills.
  • Composting: Paper and organic materials are transformed into compost, enriching our on-site organic garden with nutrients.
  • Battery Recycling: Actively participating in battery recycling programs and local bottle collection initiatives to contribute to a circular economy.
  • Electric Vehicle Charging: We offer electric vehicle charging using our solar power for $30 per day.
  • Organic Garden: Our menu is sourced from our organic garden, cultivated using the Syntropic system, free from herbicides and pesticides.
  • Vegetarian Organic Food: We embrace a fully vegetarian organic menu, aligning with our commitment to conscious and sustainable living.
  • Community Outreach: Leftover food is donated to the homeless through Liberation Larder, reflecting our dedication to community well-being.
  • Guest Education: We empower our guests to make sustainable choices, encouraging them to reduce their carbon footprint by adopting the principles of Reduce, Rethink, Recycle, and Reuse.
  • Global Perspective: We emphasise that we share one planet and advocate for treating Mother Nature with the utmost respect.

Continuous Improvement

At Byron Yoga Centre, sustainability isn’t a destination; it’s a dynamic journey. We are committed to continuously improving our sustainability practices. Join us on this transformative path towards a more sustainable and harmonious future.

The people who come to Byron Yoga Centre experience practicing mindfulness and yoga, a healthy vegetarian diet, and are introduced to the principles of our sustainability. They then go home and spread the sentiments of Byron Yoga Centre to their work colleagues, family and friends – creating a beautiful flow on effect. Together, let’s create positive ripples that extend far beyond our yoga mats.
