Course Content
During the immersion, you’ll explore a range of traditional meditation and breathing practices through guided instruction, personal practice and yogic philosophy.
Preparing for meditation:
Explore how prana-based asana, pranayama practices and meditation preparation techniques can be used to skillfully settle the body and mind, balance the nervous and energetic systems, and create the inner conditions supportive for meditation and deeper states of awareness.
Some of the techniques we will explore will include:
- Prana-based, classical Asana – posture practice centred around balancing the prana vayus (energetic winds) within the body/mind, breath-centred asana, and the cultivation of stability and ease (sthiram sukham).
- Traditional variations of Nadi Sodhana: breathing techniques that balance the Ida and Pingala Nadis and prepare energy to flow seamlessly through the central energy channel, Susumna Nadi.
- Aharana pranayama – a traditional breath and mind consolidation and integration practice
- Shvasa prashvasa Pravahi with So Hum – a simple, accessible but profound technique that is used to unite breath, mind and inner sound.
- Meditation as a formal practice and as a life practice.
- The five qualities of healthy breath – Learn about the qualities of healthy breathing and explore practices to support more conscious, balanced breathing.
- Breath awareness meditation – Explore how to use the breath as an anchor for attention and develop greater awareness during meditation.
- Mantra japa – Discover the practice of mantra repetition as a way to cultivate focus and support meditation.
- Yogic philosophy – Explore the philosophy underpinning meditation and its relevance to daily life.
- Developing your personal practice – Consider how to bring meditation and breath awareness into your everyday routine.
We’ll also explore what meditation is, what it isn’t, and how to make it accessible, enjoyable and relevant to different people. Through open discussion, we’ll consider a person-centred approach to meditation that moves beyond rigid rules and recognises that everyone’s experience is different. We’ll also explore current research into meditation and its potential benefits for wellbeing, healthy living and healthy ageing, bringing together traditional yogic wisdom and contemporary understanding.
