The Northern Rivers is made for walking.

From rainforest trails and cascading waterfalls to coastal headlands, secluded beaches and lush hinterland, the region surrounding Byron Bay offers an incredible variety of walks — often within an easy drive of town.

Whether you’re looking for a gentle morning stroll, a challenging bushwalk or somewhere to reconnect with nature after a yoga retreat, there’s a Northern Rivers walk for you.

Here are some of our favourites.

1. Walgun Cape Byron Walking Track – Byron Bay

Distance: 3.7 km loop
Time: 1–3 hours
Grade: Grade 3
Location: Byron Bay

It’s hard to beat the iconic Walgun Cape Byron walking track for a quintessential Byron Bay walk.

The 3.7 km loop takes you through rainforest, grassland, beach and clifftops before reaching the famous Cape Byron Lighthouse. Along the way, you’ll find sweeping views across the Pacific Ocean and Byron Bay coastline.

Keep your eyes on the water, too — depending on the season, you may spot dolphins, turtles, stingrays or migrating whales.

It’s also a beautiful early-morning walk, when the coastline is quieter and the temperature is cooler.

Good for: First-time visitors, ocean views, sunrise walks and a classic Byron Bay experience.

2. Minyon Falls Walking Track – Nightcap National Park

Distance: 13 km return
Time: 3–4 hours
Grade: Grade 3
Location: Nightcap National Park

If rainforest is more your style, make your way into the hinterland to Minyon Falls.

The walking track winds through lush subtropical rainforest, fern-lined creeks and ancient vegetation before descending towards the base of the spectacular waterfall.

At around 100 metres high, Minyon Falls is one of the region’s most impressive natural sights.

The walk is more challenging than the short trip to the lookout, with steep sections and plenty of steps, so allow several hours and take plenty of water.

If you’re short on time, the Minyon Falls Lookout is still well worth the drive. You can enjoy the view over the gorge without committing to the full walk.

Good for: Rainforest, waterfalls, a more active adventure and getting into the Byron hinterland.

3. Broken Head Nature Reserve – Three Sisters Walking Track

Distance: Short coastal walk
Location: Broken Head

Just south of Byron Bay, Broken Head Nature Reserve offers a quieter alternative to some of Byron’s more popular coastal walks.

The Three Sisters walking track takes you through coastal rainforest with beautiful views towards the ocean and surrounding coastline.

It’s a great option when you want to combine a walk with a swim or some time on the beach.

The rainforest is particularly beautiful after rain, when everything feels green, fresh and alive.

Good for: A relaxed half-day outing, rainforest, beaches and escaping the busier parts of Byron Bay.

4. Northern Rivers Rail Trail

Location: Tweed Valley
Best for: Walking, cycling and exploring the countryside

For something different, head north towards Murwillumbah and explore the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.

The trail follows the former railway corridor through the beautiful Tweed Valley, surrounded by farmland, rainforest and mountain scenery.

It’s a great option if you want a longer, flatter outing rather than a traditional bushwalk and sections can be enjoyed on foot or by bike.

Why walking is good for you

There’s something particularly restorative about walking in nature.

Research into nature exposure has linked time outdoors with benefits including reduced stress, improved mood and greater feelings of wellbeing. And here in the Northern Rivers, you don’t have to travel far to find yourself surrounded by rainforest, ocean or open countryside.

Walking can also be a wonderful complement to yoga.

Yoga encourages us to slow down and become more aware of the body, while walking gives us the opportunity to take that awareness outside — feeling the ground beneath our feet, noticing our breath and allowing the natural environment to become part of the experience.

Sometimes, the simplest wellness practices are the ones that require the least equipment.

A few tips for Northern Rivers walks

Before heading out, always check the latest track conditions and alerts, particularly after heavy rain.

Bring:

  • Plenty of drinking water
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sun protection and a hat
  • Insect repellent
  • Snacks for longer walks
  • A rain jacket, particularly when heading into the hinterland
  • Your phone, but don’t rely on reception in remote areas

Weather can change quickly in the Northern Rivers, and rainforest areas can become slippery after rain. Check the official NSW National Parks website before setting off.

Make walking part of your Byron Bay retreat

One of the beautiful things about staying in Byron Bay is that you can combine active time in nature with time to slow down.

Spend the morning practising yoga, head into the hinterland for a rainforest walk, cool off with a swim and finish the day with a nourishing meal.

At Byron Yoga Centre, we believe wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s simply about moving your body, breathing deeply, eating well and spending time in nature.
