Twists are so good for us in so many ways. They detoxify, massage our internal organs, help with digestion and rejuvenate the spine. Twists in a yoga practice come in many different forms, for all levels of practice. Lord of the Fish is a simple seated twist that can be worked into the warm up or cool down (or both) of any yoga sequence. It’s also a great counter pose following backbends.



1. Sit with knees bent at 90 degrees.

2. Reach right hand under right knee and take hold of left foot, drawing it back beside the right buttock. The left knee comes to the centre line of the body

3. Take right foot over left leg.

4. For open twist: place left hand onto floor behind body and hook right elbow to inside of right knee. Inhale, lift and lengthen spine. Exhale, turn to look over left shoulder.

For the stronger variation – a closed twist: place right hand onto floor behind body. Lift the left arm up and over, elbow to outside of right knee, press elbow against knee. Inhale, lift and lengthen spine. Exhale, turn to look over right shoulder..

To release: Inhale, bring gaze back towards centre of room. Exhale, release.

Contraindications and Cautions:

If pregnant, menstruating, sore back or would like to practice more gently, then perform the gentle, open variation.

Use caution or avoid the pose if you have a back or spine injury.

Sore knee – keep bottom leg straight.
